DETAILS

Tumbao is a six-piece band known in the Northwest for their joyful and energetic performances.  A unique combination of musicians allows Tumbao to combine traditional-style Salsa with modern Timba and Latin jazz.

The artists who make up Tumbao are Julio Jauregui (piano), Dean Schmidt (bass), Thomas Marriott (trumpet), Jeff Busch (drums), Pedro Vargas (congas) and Carlos Cascante (vocal).  Julio Jauregui started his music education at a very early age in Mexico City and completed a degree in music at Eugene, OR.  Julio was responsible for all the arrangements on ëRecuerdosí.  Dean Schmitt and Jeff Busch, both from Washington, are well-versed in a variety of music styles, including Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Samba, Calypso and Rock.  This provides the band a wealth of musical options.  Jeff Busch was also the percussionist on Jovino Santos Neto's album 'Canto do Rio' which was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2004.  Pedro Vargas, the newest band member, grew up in Cuba and brings a rich Cuban influence to Tumbao.  Pedro has toured the World and played with many great traditional Cuban artists, such as the stars of Buena Vista Social Club, Los Van Van, Sierra Maestra, etc.  Thomas Marriott is a well known Jazz trumpet player who has already recorded four of his own CDs.  He has also played with an impressive roster of jazz luminaries including trumpet god Maynard Ferguson, Rosemary Clooney, the Tito Puente Orchestra, and the Chico O'Farill Orchestra.  Carlos Cascante leads the group with his deep love for the music. His large knowledge of all types of Latin rhythms combined with his creative improvisational talent make him one of the up-and-coming Soneros in the Latin scene.  The music and performance of Tumbao ignites the audiences and inspires to dance.

The Seattle-based Tangabrazo is dedicated to playing music that engages both dancers and listeners.  With repertoire ranging from the classic tango groups to more modern and original compositions, they bring decades of combined professional experience to create a rich ensemble sound.

Riz is a DJ who has become a Seattle institution in and of himself.  His weekly night at Re-Bar has held-as long as anyone's been counting-the title of the longest running club night in Seattle history.  Electronic, hip-hop, reggae, drum 'n' bass: you name it, he spins it.  He is truly an icon of Seattle's nightlife and possibly the most versatile DJ this city has ever known.

In the words of DJ Riz:  it's nye eve.. from the old to the new.. and i've got to 5 hours to fill (..no problem there )..and there's gonna be dancing.. and i'm going to play all sorts of music.. from downtempo jazzy stuff..to funky older classics.. just a little bit of disco thrown in for measure..and then onwards and upwards..and always a little house..and then back to down tempo before we go home..yes..

THE CARELESS LOVERS
9:00p Lesson
9:30p-12:30p Dance

21+
$11

The Careless Lovers are an assembly of swing dancer musicians, inspired by the streets and clubs of New Orleans, New York City, and anywhere that hot jazz combos have been laying down swinging rhythms, past and present.  The desire of the band is to play a mix of traditional jazz, blues, and swing era tunes and stylings with an attitude that's acoustic, fresh, and dirty.  With an infectiously danceable rhythm, the Careless Lovers are bringing the spirit and joy of jazz culture to the streets of Seattle.

The Careless Lovers are a party-to-go made up of Seattle's most energetic young musicians, playing brass, reeds, guitar, and upright bass.  The Lovers like to sing old-timey melodies and group call and responses that get everyone involved.  The band can be found on the streets of Capitol Hill and downtown Seattle, and increasingly in the cozy dance halls, coffee shops, and bars around Seattle.

This KGB is not a spy organization, but an immensely popular acoustic trio from Seattle.  They write much of their own music, and the rest comes from all over the world:  the British Isles, French Canada, the Northeastern USA, Western and Eastern Europe, South America, the rest of the USA, and places they haven't yet identified.  Julie King plays piano.  Claude Ginsburg plays violin, concertina and viola.  Dave Bartley plays mandolin, guitar and cittern.  Everything from haunting folk waltzes to swingin' gypsy-jazz.

Sunday 11/6/11
LIVE SWING w/
CASEY MACGILL'S BLUE 4 TRIO
with special guests
CRAIG FLORY
and CHRIS SPENCER

9:00p Lesson
9:30p-12:30a Dance

All Ages
Lesson & Dance: $11

Casey MacGill's Blue 4 Trio performs music that swings. Some have called it the Nat "King" Cole Trio meets the Mills Brothers. Others have called it Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Slim Galliard meets Fred Astaire. Its music from the ''20's to the '60's, all happening at the same time, woven into a seamless, beautiful whole. At the core of the sound are the band's sometimes sweet, sometimes rough-hewn three-part harmony vocals and a piano-ukulele-bass-and-drums rhythm section that swings along in a variety of textures. Their debut recording as a group, "Casey MacGill's Blue 4 Trio", features 10 trio tracks and 2 quartet tracks. Says Casey: "My other projects were like oil paintings, constantly being tweaked and refined. The Blue 4 Trio CD is my watercolor, I put the paint on and what you get is what you get." The result is soft, loud, happy, sad, raw, mellow, with an honest mistake or 2 thrown in for good measure. It is a real band playing real music.

Casey MacGill is the heart and soul of the band. From California, he is a classic Hollywood character in appearance and style. MacGill plays boogie-woogie, swing, and stride piano. He blows a lyrical cornet, and his most unique instrumental voice is a 6-string tenor ukulele. He has been singing and arranging vocal harmonies for almost 30 years, in a career that stretches from Los Angeles (Mood Indigo, feature films "Frances" and "Swing Shift") to Spokane, WA (The Spirits of Rhythm and the neo-swing classic CD "Jump") to Broadway (The musical "Swing") and finally to Seattle. "I've played a lot of music with a lot of people," he says "and one thing I've learned is to tailor my arrangements to the individual musicians. Its gives each musical situation a unique sound." He steers the band from his piano bench, alternately cruising along and sweating feverishly, switching intuitively between the ukulele and the piano and the cornet, singing and scatting, sometimes all within the same song.

Mike Daugherty came to Seattle from Baltimore, Maryland--a fact that is not lost on anyone. He played drums in punk rock bands in his hometown. In the Pacific Northwest, he founded and led the Yes Yes Boys, a popular early jazz and hokum band that featured Del Rey on Ukulele. Almost everything about his style is East Coast, from his bowties to his whiskey-cum-loudmouth singing style. Brash, yes, but with a melancholy undertone. What is curiously understated is his drumming. "When I started playing with the B4T I had to change. The sound required a more understated rhythm thing, so I lost the bass-drum, the toms, some cymbals, and ended up with the little kit you see me using today. I use brushes mostly, sticks very occasionally. It allows us to stay close together on stage, and puts the focus on the song and the singing."

Bassist Matt Weiner's resume includes performances and recordings with The Flying Neutrinos, The Hot Club of Cowtown, The Asylum Street Spankers, Rani Arbo, Danny Barnes and Willy Mason. He hails from Boston, lived in New York City and Austin, TX before coming to Seattle. He eschews the modern "amplified" acoustic bass style for the plucky stomp of the early jazz bass pioneers like Walter Page, Pops Foster, Steve Brown and Jimmy Blanton. "When Mike, Casey and I got together, the fit was just right," says Matt. "Casey and Mike let me play bass the way I hear it, because that's the way they like to hear it." Matt relishes the challenge of playing bass and singing at the same time: "I'm playing two fretless instruments at once, so things can get squirrelly. That's why I'm not always smiling up there."

Solomon's bands (including the Solomon Douglas Swingtet, Back Pocket, Corner Pocket, and the Solomon Douglas Trio) have played at countless exchanges, camps, workshops, and other events in North America, Asia, and Australia since 2000.  His experience as a swing dancer and dance instructor gives him an understanding unique among musicians of the music that swing dancers and blues dancers like to dance to!

His influences as a pianist include Erroll Garner, Oscar Peterson, Gene Harris, Count Basie, and Thelonious Monk.  His small groups (such as the Solomon Douglas Trio) play a mixture of musical styles including blues, old-school swing, and groovy mainstream swinging jazz with tinges of bop and soul-jazz.

The Solomon Douglas Swingtet is a ten-piece dance band whose repertoire is rooted in that of the Basie band (One O'Clock Jump, Jive at Five, Splanky, Shorty George, Shiny Stockings) and that of the Ellington band (Cottontail, "C" Jam Blues, Mood Indigo, Take The "A" Train), with other big-band standards and classic jazz tunes thrown in as well.  They can cater to a crowd that prefers up-tempo classic swing (such as Seattle or Cleveland), to a crowd that prefers slower groovier jazz (such as Portland or Toronto), or to anything in between.  The band makes frequent appearances at the Century Ballroom (Seattle, WA) and at the Glen Echo Spanish Ballroom (Washington, DC).  Past Lindy Exchange and dance camp events that featured the Solomon Douglas Swingtet include the Virginia Beach Lindy Exchange, Jun. 2007; Swing Out Nowhere (Moscow, ID), Apr. 2007; the Sacramento Swing Jam, Aug. 2006; the Philadelphia Lindy Exchange, Jun. 2006; Camp Jitterbug (Seattle, WA), May 2006 and May 2007; the Portland Lindy Exchange, Mar. 2006; the Emerald City Blues Festival (Seattle), Oct. 2005; the Seattle Lindy Exchange, Aug. 2005; Swing Out Northwest (near Seattle), Dec. 2002, Dec. 2004, and Dec. 2006; the All-Balboa Weekend (Cleveland), May 2003; the Detroit Lindy Exchange, May 2003; and the Toronto Lindy Exchange, Oct. 2002.  The Solomon Douglas Swingtet released its first CD in November, 2006, its second in June, 2009 and its third in March, 2011.

THE CONN ARTISTS

The Conn Artists is both a talented ensemble playing a variety of splendid dance music and also a play on words:  Conn, as musical insiders know, is a legendary manufacturer of trumpets, clarinets, trombones, saxophones and other instruments - and the seven musicians to whom you'll dance on Sunday will all be armed with the greatest horns from the Conn Company's classic catalogue.

Expect a vast variety of songs from the 1930s through the 1980s:  waltzes, swing, Fox trots, Mambo, polka, schottische and even calypso.  "I've tried to hit as wide a range of styles and tempi as possible," says master Conn Artist Phil Wilkinson.  "This music is from a wide range of sources:  France, Dixie, Manhattan, Chicago, all over the dance music map.  You'll love the mix of waltzes."

Phil had planned on calling his group "The Conn Men," but realized some of the best players he wanted were female, thus, he shifted to the gender-neutral moniker, Conn Artists.

THE SOLOMON DOUGLAS SWINGTET
9:00p Lesson
9:30p-12:30a Dance

All Ages
$12

2002.  The Solomon Douglas Swingtet released its first CD in November, 2006 and its second CD in June, 2009.

No mask, no entry.  Masks available at the door for $5.

This year's theme:  Hollywood Heroes, Movietown Myths.

Our previous Masquerade Waltzes were sellouts, so reserve your 2011 ticket sooner than later.  Expect a musical mix of swing, blues, fox trots, one-steps and waltzes of all tempos.  Because this is a true masquerade, you will indeed need a mask for entry into the ballroom.

Consider starting your evening with gourmand-ish pleasure:  The Tin Table proffers spirits, wines, Champagnes, and extraordinary small-plate meals beginning at 3 p.m. - just across the hall from the ballroom.  It will satisfy all of your gastronomic whims until 1 a.m.  For dinner reservations call 206-320-8458.

Seattle's Valse Café Orchestra coalesced in 1999 with a singular goal:  to win the hearts of good dancers with post-modern renditions of dance hall classics.  The ensemble's eclectic repertoire celebrates a romantic mélange of bygone eras and cultures:  Paris in the thirties.  Budapest in the 1890s.  Yiddish melancholy.  Gypsy perseverance.  Old Vienna.  Ragtime Manhattan.  Disparate worlds indeed-all connected by the mesmerizing cadence of waltz.

The Valse Cafe Orchestra, as its name implies, plays a preponderance of waltzes, but the group's programs always feature a mix of swing tunes, fox trots, one steps, polkas, two steps and tangos to create moments of fantasy and romance.  (And what's a cafe orchestra?  Simply a smaller version of the symphony - necessary in many boutique-size ballrooms and cabarets.  Most of the time, for example, the great waltzes of Johann Strauss were played not by the Vienna Philharmonic but by dozens of these nimbler ensembles.)
