Ricardo Lemvo has established himself as a pioneer with his innovative music, combining Latin and African elements from salsa to soukous with an occasional merengue or Afro-Portuguese excursion. This Congo-born artist is the embodiment of the Afro-Latin Diaspora which connects back to Mother Africa via the Cuban clave rhythm. Lemvo is truly multi-cultural and equally at home singing in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Lingala, and Kikongo.

Since forming his Los Angeles-based band Makina Loca in 1990, Lemvo has refined his craft and vision, raising his joyous voice with strength, singing songs that celebrate life, and most importantly, inspiring his audiences to let loose and dance away their worries.

Touring aggressively the past year-and-a half and playing a variety of venues - from college campuses, to bars, to coffeehouses, to an old carpet warehouse - Matt Wertz engages listeners with his impassioned breathy vocals and a stage presence reminiscent of a conversation with a good friend. One moment he's evoking laughter by performing boy-band cover songs and spouting off embarrassing stories about himself, the next moment baring his innermost thoughts for all to scrutinize. Intriguingly enough, each of these facets of his show are equally a part of who Matt is.

After the music fades and the house lights are up, Matt is the guy in faded jeans, a t-shirt and, unsurprisingly, a pair of designer sneakers from his massive collection, mingling with the audience and signing autographs that are more like yearbook entries. As for the future, Matt's plans are simple - in every aspect, in every way he knows how, he wants to keep creating. Whether that means tennis shoes or tales of love, relationship, and faith, Matt knows he can trust whatever is written on the next page of his story. "It's so refreshing to know I'm right where I'm supposed to be," he declares. "And I really haven't had much at all to do with it."

Dave Barnes is no wizened sage crawling out of Muscle Shoals. He's is a good looking, blond, 25 year old white guy from Kosciusko, Mississippi (Where? Exactly). He has a southern accent. He is unerringly polite. He's funny, but Jonathan Winters funny. Funny like a smart granddad. So when he taps into whatever truth serum he's apparently got, just sit back, enjoy, and quit asking so many questions.

The spectacular band that Barnes and Cash assembled for his most recent recording highlights the strong elements of soul and R&B in Barnes' songs, indicative of the diverse influences exerted on him during his childhood in the deep south. But even though the playing on Brother, Bring the Sun is consistently top notch, the focus remains on the songs, not all of which feature crazy solos and high energy grooves. By the time we reach the album's stunning closing track, On a Night Like This, things are stripped down to a sparse piano and cello arrangement clocking in just under two minutes.

Witherspoon!!!! is a group of four sisters who originally began singing a cappella at the ages of 7, 9, 10 and 13. They've been singing together since 1992 and their music has grown to include musical accompaniment. Their fresh unique style appeals to the urban listener as well as the traditional listener. Their sound is fresh, exciting, and more importantly of sweet harmony.

They initially began performing solely in their home church but were inspired by the awesome receptions they received when they ventured out to local events around the Seattle/Tacoma area. They were encouraged to enter local talent shows and placed first in all they entered. Two such events were Tacoma's Gospollo First Annual Show sponsored by the Pantages Theater in Tacoma , WA . Witherspoon!!!! is gifted and committed and able to set souls on fire!

They won the grand prize at the Washington Christian Talent Show 2001. Witherspoon!!!! took home top honors in each event, and that inspired them to share more of their talents with the world.

Their list of accomplishments include opening for national recording artists Mary Mary November 2002 Hezekiah Walker, Mavis Staples and James Hall. They also opened for The Five Blind Boys of Alabama January 2002 and others too numerous to list.

Acclaimed for her "original and unsettling vision," as well as her harmony-laced melodies and evocative arrangements, Phillips' critically-acclaimed work includes "The Indescribable Wow" (1988), "Cruel Inventions" (1991), the Grammy-nominated "Martinis and Bikinis" (1994), and 1996's "Omnipop." Robert Earl Keen is a potent force among a cadre of talented Texas tunesmiths making musical hay early in the new millennium. Along with young upstarts Charlie Robison, Jack Ingram and Pat Green, to name a few, Keen leads the pack of noteworthy performers whose artistry is marked by a quality of edgy rebelliousness that doesnít quite mix with country musicís mainstream.

This may explain why the Bandera nativeís fan-base has exploded in recent years. From West Coast cantinas to hipster hangouts on the lower eastside of Manhattan and scads of honky tonks in between, Keenís penchant for mixing beguiling ballads with raucous honky tonk rave-ups have won him widespread praise from both critics and fans. Daily Variety called him ìÖ the very model of the timeless Texas troubadour Ö .î

Long known for his formidable writing skills (his songs have been covered by famous admirers Joe Ely, Nanci Griffith, Kelly Willis and college roommate Lyle Lovett), Gravitational Forces, Keenís ninth album, like Walking Distance, his critically acclaimed 1998 release, is tangible proof that Keen is indeed heir to the Texas songwriting legacy established by Townes, Willie and Guy.

KEPA JUNKERA is the Basque country's most notable young musician, having first visited this country in a trio - Trans-Europe Diatonique - with John Kirkpatrick (UK) and Riccardo Tesi (Italy). From an early age Kepa showed an interest in the diatonic accordion (trikitixa in Basque) and started playing it from an early age. His dream came true when the great Basque group OSKORRI took an interest in the young lad with the lightning fingers on the 'triki' buttons, and invited him to play and record with them - he is still there! His career soon blossomed as he won numerous top level awards and as he travelled around the world to delight audiences. He has a boundless energy to submerge himself in projects and as such he has recorded and travelled with many great musicians including The Chieftains (Ireland); La Bottine Souriante (QuÈbec); Carlos NuÒez (Spain), amongst others. With his own band (voted as best live act in Spain) he adds an exciting new dimension to his music with the use of the 'txalaparta' - wooden poles/sticks beaten on horizontal planks of wood - which add a drive and depth to the music.

Since her remarkable debut in 1988, Tracy Chapman has captivated audiences around the globe with her pure voice, evocative songs and intense spirit. Along the way she has sold millions of albums and won four Grammy Awards. Few artists can match Tracy's gentle but passionate vibrato, her literate lyrical compassion and her uncompromising stance. From the startling honesty of her multiplatinum debut, which features the now-classic "Fast Car", to the phenomenal reaction she received for "New Beginning" and its gem "Give Me One Reason", she has always shared with her audience stories that matter and songs that ring true.

"The upcoming presidential election is one of the most critical in our nation's history. More than ever, every single vote counts, and I want to do whatever I can to urge every American to make their voice heard. I am supporting Driving Votes because they are doing an incredible job, reaching people on the grassroots, personal level to make registration easy. They are empowering new voters, those that previously felt disenfranchised or unable to effect change. By doing these small shows in these swing states, I hope to remind each individual in those rooms, that they can take action and make a real difference." - Tracy Chapman

Cary Hoffman feels that Sinatra's approach to the great American standards of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and others, should be perpetuated by singers today. Cary began crooning in the same resonant voice in the NY nightclubs in the early 60's when Sinatra was alive. His love affair with Sinatra's vocal style began in the 50s and continues now. Yes, it is true that Cary shares Sinatra's silky baritone and vocal range, although Cary's voice is a little bit higher.

The deep feelings and passionate emotions that Sinatra expressed have strangely found resonance in Cary: the sadness, the swagger, the happiness, the sensitivity and the remorse. They all seem so familiar to Cary that it is almost effortless for him to recreate the Sinatra feeling in these songs ... it is almost like Cary had lived these songs himself.

Maybe that is why Cary's interpretations are so real, so worth hearing, and most importantly, not an impersonation.

Souad Massi is a talented and courageous young guitarist and vocalist from Algeria, now based in Paris. She was born in 1972 and has spent a lot of time seriously studying music with the ambition to become a singer. Other members of her family are also performers. At one point Souad was in a flamenco band. Following this she formed a new rock band, Atakor, with whom she toured in Algeria for seven years and recorded a top-selling cassette and 2 videos. Reminiscent of what Joan Baez said in the 1960s, she was not satisfied with being just an entertainer and became outspoken but this was a difficult stand to take and still remain in Algeria, especially for a young woman.

Souad's music can be described as rock and traditional. Instruments she uses are electric and flamenco guitars, Arabic lute, gumbri (Saharan acoustic bass) and karkabous (Saharan metal castanets). In 2003 Souad's second album, Deb was released. On it the essence of her music remained the same: moving poetic love songs and highly enjoyable swaying rhythms as well as more musical styles and orchestration. Algeria is always in the heart of both her music and life. Her family is still in Algeria but she wants to take advantage of the freedom of expression she has in Europe.

The leader of two multi-racial South African Zulu/pop bands - Juluka and Savuka - vocalist and composer Clegg arrived in South Africa with his family in 1959. By the age of 10 he had fallen in love with African, and in particular, Zulu, music. His first memories of Zulu music are of hearing street performer Mntonanazo, who performed frequently in his neighbourhood. Later, he formed his first band, the sextet Juluka (Zulu for "sweat") in 1976. While most Africans responded with great enthusiasm to the sight of a white man immersing himself in Zulu music, the reaction of white South Africans was by and large hostile, and Juluka were engaged in a running battle with the authorities. They suffered from racist abuse, threats of violence and then an extreme shortage of available venues in a country where multi-racial gatherings were, to all practical purposes, forbidden.

Overcoming all these obstacles, the band scored their first hit with the single "Woza Friday" in 1978, by which time they had built up a national following through their formidably powerful live appearances, which included wholly convincing displays of traditional Zulu indlamu (foot stamping) dancing by Clegg. They also succeeded in persuading the authorities to allow them to tour overseas, and in the early 80s performed in the UK, Europe and the USA, where their 1982 album Scatterlings Of Africa, was released in 1984.

His solo career was launched in 1986 with Third World Child, which became an international success, selling over a million copies. A sold out tour of France followed, before stints in the USA and Canada. In the process he became one of the first African stars to appear on The Johnny Carson Show. Cruel Crazy Beautiful World saw Clegg upgrade the band's sound in a modern Los Angeles studio, though his lyrical concerns about South Africa, brilliantly extolled in "Woman Be My Country" and the title track, remained undiluted.

Katie Melua has just turned 19, and has signed a five album recording deal and management contract with Dramtico. Upon graduating from the Brit School, Katie began working with Mike Batt on the songs for her first album, "Call Off The Search", which has a jazzy, bluesy feel and reached Platinum status within just over two months of release and became Number One on the official Album charts. Her single, "The Closest Thing To Crazy", went to number ten in the UK singles charts in December 2003.

"Katie is a fantastic discovery for me to have made. I was auditioning to find a singer who could sing jazz and blues in an interesting way, but I never expected to find someone quite so unique, - quite so obviously on her way to greatness. She is one of the most intelligent singers I've worked with for a very long time, - there are little reminders in her voice, of all sorts of other singers like Eartha Kitt and Edith Piaf, - of whom she has never heard. She exudes a modest confidence, is completely sure of herself and has a maturity far in advance of her age. She's a charismatic stage performer and has beautiful, hypnotic eyes"

Most Americans first heard of Jamie Cullum when Universal Music paid a whopping £1 million for his contract, gambling that he could sell like a male equivalent of their contractee Diana Krall. When I listened to Mr. Cullum's most recent album, "Pointless Nostalgic" (released on the independent British label Candid), he did indeed strike me as similar, in his understated detachment, to Ms. Krall or Norah Jones. In person, however, I was struck by how wrong that impression was.

Jamie Cullum is surely one of the most dynamic, in-your-face performers to ever appear at the Algonquin. Short, dark, and mop-topped, he is at once Britain's answer to Harry Connick (one of his heroes) and jazz's answer to Davy Jones. Mr. Cullum is wildly irreverent and seems unable to take any song seriously. He starts his opening number, "It Could Happen To You" by scatting, humming, and using his piano as percussion - pounding on the wood as if it were a conga drum - a device he employs several times during the evening.

In September 1999, a pamphlet circulating in Seattle featured ìThe fresh sounds of Cambalache,î referring to the philosophy of the nine-piece Seattle salsa band that made its debut that year.

Ever since, Cambalache has challenged and redefined the characteristic sound of Northwest Salsa scene. Never afraid to incorporate new ideas, or to drop others that have been exploited, Cambalacheís eclectic style is an embodiment of the richness and diversity of Latin America. Deeply rooted in the latest music movements developing in Cuba, Cambalacheís performances are a blend of great salsa classics and contemporary tunes. At each performance, audiences are seduced by the energetic atmosphere of Timba and Nueva Salsa.

A musical tradition. Throat-singing comprises what one might call a lexicon of musical onomatopoeia in which natural sounds are mimetically transformed into musical representations.

"Huun Huur Tu" literally means "sun propeller", which is the vertical separation of light which occurs in conjunction with sunrises & sunsets. This refraction of light seems analagous to the "refraction" of sound produced in Tuvan throat singing - hence the band's name.

"The Tuvans will ride into your brain and leave hoofprints up & down your spine"
-San Francisco Bay Guardian

"It is unfamiliar yet very accessible, an other-worldly but deeply spiritual music that is rooted in the sounds of nature"
-Chicago Tribune

As New Yorkís most sought after trombonist, he reinvigorates the Latin music scene by projecting his essence vis- !-vis, his emphatic solos, and rhythmic melodies which emanate from his soul and through his trombone.

Whether before a sold-out audience, or in the company of the fans at home, Bosch unabashedly raises the raw intensity of his all-star band, igniting the spirit to relish in the swinging and complex mosaic of contemporary Latin music at its best ñ Salsa Dura.

Emerging from a city best known for loud, sloppy rock, The Souvenirs' undeniable grace and knack for crafting tight, classic-sounding songs immediately sets them apart. Storming through an Orbison-like vortex of honky - tonk, Western swing, rockabilly, and timeless country ballads, The Souvenirs boast a triumphant sound that blurs the line between modern and vintage, country and old-time rock n' roll; the band concentrates on age-old, all-too-easy-to-relate-to dilemmas of love, betrayal and heartbreak.

Based in Seattle, The Roy Kay Trio has been doing their best to get people out of their chairs and on the dance floor for over a year now. Influenced by many types of early music, the most well known being Charlie Feathers, Hank Penny, Johnny Burnette, Carl Perkins and Johnny Horton, the trio works hard to write songs that embrace the heart of early country while retaining the shear energy of mid-fifties rockabilly.

JAMIE CULLUM
