Sunday 12/18/05 ALL AGES LIVE SWING w/ STOMPY JONES (AKA SWING SESSION) 9:00p Swing Lesson (Free w/Cover) 9:30p-12:30a Dance $15 The Swing Session has a new name: Stompy Jones! The same six fellas, the same jumpin' jazz and swingin' blues, but a new name to go along with a new album. With their vintage attire and romping small-band swing, these fellas have injected a healthy dose of "Central Avenue" inspired Rhythm & Blues into the current swing scene. Little David's thumpin' stand-up bass, Bowen Brown's swinging double-shuffle drumming and the rolling boogie-woogie piano of Scott Lawrence provide the foundation. Riffing on top is Tim Hyland on trumpet and Jeff "Erv" Ervin on tenor and alto saxophone. Together these two highly respected "take-off men" create the fireworks of vintage jazz. At center stage, the "swing man" rejoicing and shouting the blues is the irrepressible Peter "Pops" Walsh! Not many of the current revivalists wear the mantle of "Swing" with as much confidence and ease as these journeymen of jump. "The swingin'est of 'em all" is what many of the best swing-dancers, jitterbugs and old-timey music enthusiasts are saying about The Swing Session! Whether they're appearing at a posh supper club, concert hall, or a little place "just down the road apiece" these fellas deliver high-fidelity, high flying, eight-to-the-bar romance with every performance. The Swing Session revisits the rumbling, driving, joyous, pulsating, overwhelming style of jazz that came to be known as Rock & Roll. |

Saturday 10/29/05 LIVE SALSA w/ TIEMPO LIBRE 9:15p Salsa Lesson (Free w/Cover) 9:45p-1:30a Dance $20 One of the hottest young Latin bands today, equally at home in concert halls, jazz clubs and dance venues, Miami-based Tiempo Libre has become known for their imaginative, high-voltage Latin jazz and the seductive hard-driving rhythms of their distinctive timba, true modern heirs to the rich tradition of the music of their native Cuba. Combining some of the most sought-after musicians in Miami today, the creation of this band emerged from a common desire amongst its founding members, all of them Cuban immigrants and old friends. Schooled in different Havana conservatories and all enjoying thriving careers in Latin music, these seven extraordinary musicians came together to realize their collective musical dream: to create a new musical style by fusing their diverse individual talents with a unique mix of jazz, traditional Cuban and Afro-Cuban music. Their eagerness to share their music with others led these multi-talented musicians to come together between projects to develop their new style together. Hence the name Tiempo Libre (Free Time). Since their formation in 2001, Tiempo Libre have been on a mission: to share the musical heritage which they grew up with as wide an audience as possible, reinterpreting and reinvigorating traditional Cuban music with a youthful, modern sound. In January 2005, Tiempo Libre signed a multi-record deal with Shanachie Entertainment. Their debut CD on that label - Arroz con Mango - will be released in May 2005. To support the release of the album, Tiempo Libre will be touring extensively throughout the United States, including performances at the Ravinia Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Festival International de Louisiane, Society of the Performing Arts in Houston, to mention just a few - and they will make their European debut during a tour to Italy in August 2005. Each of these in-demand musicians has vast experience in the music industry, performing, touring and recording with such artists as Albita, Cachao, Arturo Sandoval, NG La Banda, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Isaac Delgado, Roberto Torres, and DLG to name just a few. |

Thursday 9/8 BENEFIT FOR INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL GRAMMY NOMINATED CUBAN MUSICIAN JUAN-CARLOS FORMELL 5:30p General Admission 7p Show $12 Limited dinner reservations available. The Grammy-Nominated musician returns to Seattle to perform a benefit concert for the Seattle International Children's Festival. Expect the unexpected from Cuban music rebel Juan-Carlos Formell, whose visionary songs have been hailed as "the magical realism of music". A virtuoso on guitar and bass, his use of progressive rhythms and his intensely personal approach to songwriting have been compared to the work of Caetano Veloso and Joao Gilberto, Steve Earleand Neil Young. "A romantic with a heart like a laser beam, Formell deftly mines his Cuban musical heritage for a solo set of nontrivial love songs inspired by New Orleans's 'cemeteries & desire'. Like Brazil's Caetano Veloso, Formell brings the rumba and bolero forms up to contemporary speed without tarnishing their essence." ~ R Gehr, The Village Voice "Count Juan-Carlos Formell's perfectly beautiful Cemeteries & Desire among those albums that, though foreign, requires no translation -- to play this disc is to fall swooningly, unblinkingly in love with it. No previous experience with Cuban music is needed, though the ability to discern its many flavors aids a listener in justifying the praise it unfailingly extracts. Unlike thundering, lust-steeped conga, mambo, or salsa -- all horns, drums, heat, and bravado -- what Formell brings to modern Latin music is Caetano Veloso-style sophistication and intimacy." ~ Tammy La Gorce, All Music Guide |

Wednesday 8/17/05 VOCALIST LIZZ WRIGHT 7p General Admission 8p Show $15 Sorry, all dinner reservations have been filled Lizz's new CD was reviewed in the June 14, 2004 issue of THE SEATTLE POST INTELLIGENCER On her 2003 debut, Salt, Lizz Wright was hailed by People Magazine as ?one of the year's most promising new voices,? a ?smoky, simmering? talent, according to USA Today. Wright's new album Dreaming Wide Awake, set for June 14 release on Verve Forecast, finds that promise fulfilled. Wright recorded ?Dreaming? at Allaire Studios in Woodstock, NY, with Craig Street (Cassandra Wilson, k.d. lang) producing, and a deep well of New York talent contributing: guitarist Bill Frisell, Grammy-winning songwriter Jesse Harris, Mark Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius), Ollabelle organist Glenn Patscha, and Toshi Reagon among others. Three of the eleven songs on ?Dreaming? were written or co-written by Wright, proving that her ?rapidly burgeoning writing talent? (LA Times) has now fully blossomed. From the deep-in-the-pocket, earthy soul of ?Hit The Ground? (co-written with Jesse Harris and Toshi Reagon), to the buoyant Fender Rhodes groove of ?Trouble,? or the hazy, aching title track, each of Wright's original compositions casts an unforgettable spell. Elsewhere she lends her ?pitch-perfect, full-bodied voice? (NY Times) to a gorgeous, melancholic reading of Joe Henry's ?Stop? (first popularized by Madonna on her Music album); turns Neil Young's ?Old Man,? into a dark cautionary tale; strips Ella Jenkins' ?Wake Up Little Sparrow? down to a spare, zen-folk meditation; imparts the Aquarian anthem ?Get Together? first popularized by the Youngbloods, with a new urgency; and recasts the Ric Marlow/Bobby Scott tune ?A Taste of Honey? - best known as an early Beatles hit - as a haunting delta blues. Lizz Wright was born in the small town of Hahira, GA. The second of three children, her father was a Holiness Church pastor, her mother the church organist. Wright grew up traveling the south, singing with her parents and siblings. She first came to national attention in 2002, when she played a series of tribute shows to the great Billie Holiday. Reviewing one of those shows, The LA Times proclaimed, with only a hint of hyperbole, ?she walked on stage at the Hollywood Bowl a virtual unknown. Fifteen minutes later, she walked off a star.? Since then, Wright has toured the world growing her audience and meeting new fans. Don't miss a chance to see Lizz live... |

Monday 8/15/05 FROM AUSTRALIA: SINGER / SONGWRITER MISSY HIGGINS with RAUL MIDON 7p General Admission 8p Show $12 Limited dinner reservations available.Reservations are made separate from ticket purchase. For dinner reservations, please contact our office during business hours at 206 324-7263. See Raul's live performance at the Kennedy Center Missy Higgins is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Her music is unadorned and unforgettable. Missy started singing in her early teens; lying about her age to get into local bars and play with her brother's jazz combo. She was thrust into the limelight in her homeland when she won a demo competition conducted by the national alternative broadcaster, Triple J. Although she was still at high school, her song "All For Believing" quickly became one of the station's most requested tracks of 2001. Many music industry types urged Missy to capitalize on this national radio exposure by quickly releasing a CD. However, she wanted more time to grow as a songwriter and performer so instead of rushing into a recording studio she chose to spend the following year backpacking across Europe and writing lots more music. While she was off doing that, a live recording she'd made for Triple J found it's way to Los Angeles tastemaker radio station KCRW and they started playing it. Many U.S. labels responded to the sound of her unique voice wrapping itself around her emotive lyrics. Even though she had spent 2002 trekking around youth hostels, by the end of that year she had landed an international deal with Warner Bros Records. Missy's memorable debut album "The Sound Of White" was released in early September. In an extraordinary achievement for a new artist, the album also debuted at #1 and has since spent five weeks in that chart position. It is already certified quadruple platinum. "The Sound Of White" opens with the first song Missy ever wrote - "All For Believing". It then weaves its way through twelve other pieces including the stark beauty of piano ballads like "Nightminds", "Any Day Now", "They Weren't There" and "The Sound Of White". Also on display are a few of Missy's acoustic guitar driven songs, including the live favourites "Don't Ever" and "Ten Days". With their lyrical focus on distance and desire, these stripped back tracks have clearly been inspired by all of the traveling Missy has done over recent years. Elsewhere, "Casualty" and "This Is How It Goes" reflect her jazz background while "Katie", "The River" and "The Special Two" typify the darker lyrical outlook that creeps into the second half of the album. The thread that binds all of this material together is Missy's direct lyrical approach; she has an undeniable knack for penning piercingly sincere songs. When this is matched with the album's no frills' instrumentation it's a powerful combination pure and simple. Given all this, the album title is obviously apt. "The first thing that usually draws me to a songwriter is their lyrics and the next most important thing is their live performances", Missy explains. "That's why I love artists like Aimee Mann - they write amazing lyrics and then when they play them onstage the experience is unforgettable". The New Mexico-born, New York-based Raúl Midón makes his recording debut with State of Mind, produced by Arif Mardin and Joe Mardin. The 13-track collection of Midón originals is a remarkable mélange of soul, R&B, pop, folk, jazz and Latin. The CD places on display his earnest, lyrical songwriting; full-bodied vocals steeped in soul; a singular syncopated, flamenco- and jazz-infused acoustic guitar style; a unique vocal trumpet improvisation; and hopeful disposition. While you can hear traces of Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Jose Feliciano and, Richie Havens in his music, Midón is an extraordinary original whose passion is expressed in his indelible songs. "I like to celebrate the possible, the highest, the best of possibilities for human beings," says Midón, who has been blind since birth and is the son of an African American mother and an Argentinean father. "It's easy to be pessimistic given the state of the world. But I'm inspired by people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi who had the ability to transform. Collectively we create an enormously powerful force that can change the world and overcome any obstacle." |

Friday 2/18/05 BENEFIT FOR RED CROSS DISASTER RELIEF FUND SALSA w/ CAMBALACHE, YERBABUENA, LATIN EXPRESSION & TUMBAO 8:30p Salsa Lesson ($5 w/Cover) 9:30p Dance $20 The Century Ballroom, along with CAMBALACHE, YERBABUENA, LATIN EXPRESSION & TUMBAO are proud to sponsor this benefit for the Red Cross' Disaster Relief Fund. This fund provides relief for Tsunami victims, as well as victims of disasters world wide that are also in need of support. In September 1999, a pamphlet circulating in Seattle featured The fresh sounds of Cambalache, referring to the philosophy of the nine-piece Seattle salsa band that made its debut that year. Ever since, Cambalache has challenged and redefined the characteristic sound of Northwest Salsa scene. Never afraid to incorporate new ideas, or to drop others that have been exploited, Cambalaches eclectic style is an embodiment of the richness and diversity of Latin America. Deeply rooted in the latest music movements developing in Cuba, Cambalaches performances are a blend of great salsa classics and contemporary tunes. At each performance, audiences are seduced by the energetic atmosphere of Timba and Nueva Salsa. Yerbabuena is a 12-piece charanga orchestra based in Seattle. They've been performing traditional and modern Cuban salsa, including son, cha-cha-cha, guaguanco and danzon, to Northwest audiences since 1994. In addition to originals, their repertoire draws from the music of Cachao, Buena Vista Social Club, Orquesta Aragon, Los Van Van, Benny More, Eliades Ochoa, Candido Fabre, Original de Manzanillo and many other great Cuban artists. Hot Salsa! The only way to describe Latin Expression is "phenomenal". This 12-piece orchestra creates a sound complimented by flashy styles and synchronized movements. The orchestra is driven by balancing four horns, a five piece rhythm and percussion section, followed by three vocalists. This is the premier Salsa band in all the Northwest. The orchestra's repertoire includes a unique variety of merengue, bolero, cumbia, Latin Jazz, and other rhythms and styles generally encompassed by the term "salsa". Also described as "Power Salsa". Tumbao is a six piece latin ensemble that plays a variety of Latin Rythms. From Boleros to Timba, from Joropo to Danzon, Tumbao will bring the Latin American and Caribbean music to get you dancing. |
