Tumbao is a six-piece band known in the Northwest for their joyful and energetic performances. A unique combination of musicians allows Tumbao to combine traditional-style Salsa with modern Timba and Latin jazz.

The artists who make up Tumbao are Julio Jauregui (piano), Dean Schmidt (bass), Thomas Marriott (trumpet), Jeff Busch (drums), Pedro Vargas (congas) and Carlos Cascante (vocal). Julio Jauregui started his music education at a very early age in Mexico City and completed a degree in music at Eugene, OR. Julio was responsible for all the arrangements on ëRecuerdosí. Dean Schmitt and Jeff Busch, both from Washington, are well-versed in a variety of music styles, including Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Samba, Calypso and Rock. This provides the band a wealth of musical options. Jeff Busch was also the percussionist on Jovino Santos Neto's album 'Canto do Rio' which was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2004. Pedro Vargas, the newest band member, grew up in Cuba and brings a rich Cuban influence to Tumbao. Pedro has toured the World and played with many great traditional Cuban artists, such as the stars of Buena Vista Social Club, Los Van Van, Sierra Maestra, etc. Thomas Marriott is a well known Jazz trumpet player who has already recorded four of his own CDís. He has also played with an impressive roster of jazz luminaries including trumpet god Maynard Ferguson, Rosemary Clooney, the Tito Puente Orchestra, and the Chico O'Farill Orchestra. Carlos Cascante leads the group with his deep love for the music. His large knowledge of all types of Latin rhythms combined with his creative improvisational talent make him one of the up-and-coming Soneros in the Latin scene. The music and performance of Tumbao ignites the audiences and inspires to dance.

The inimitable Johnny Boyd, whose boyish visage recalls classic Hollywood, founded the critically acclaimed San Francisco band Indigo Swing in 1993, wrote the majority of the band’s original material, and inspired a new generation of music lovers in the recent retro swing movement.

Born in San Francisco and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Boyd began singing at age 10 with the Phoenix Boys Choir, and continued to perform with various high school and college music projects before returning to San Francisco to form Indigo Swing.  After years of relentless touring throughout the U.S. and Europe, Boyd left his band to rest and pursue a solo music career.

Lesson: $5, plus cover

Wayne "The Train" Hancock has been called "the master of hillbilly swing," a "roots Renaissance man," a "country singer's country singer" and "Hank Williams meets Gershwin."  But the phrase most frequently echoed throughout his career is "Wayne Hancock is the real deal."  Joe Ely said it, Hank Williams III said it, Bobby Koefer from the Texas Playboys said it, as have countless music fans and writers when referring to Hancock's authentic and original blend of honky tonk, western swing, blues and big band that he calls "juke joint swing!"

Authenticity and sincerity have been the cornerstones of Hancock's writing and music since the start of his career.  His refusal to compromise his vision and sell out his music has earned him a fiercely loyal underground following.

Hancock's vision, as he puts it, is "to bring people together and make them feel good about music.  It's a spiritual thing and without spirituality, you've got nothin'.  There ain't much on the radio that strikes me as being original or from the heart, most of it's from the pocketbook and it shows."

Wayne is proud of his rural roots and culture and has thoroughly absorbed the spirit of country music's forefathers such as Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams and Jimmie Rodgers.  Never a mere imitator, the cutting-edge style that emerges is every bit his own. He breathes youth and driving energy into traditional country forms and adds a dash of big band horns, boogie woogie piano, scorching rockabilly beats, heavenly Hawaiian steel licks and some wigged-out hillbilly jazz guitar.

Hancock figures he started writing songs around the age of twelve, and he did a lot of traveling around Texas, playing juke joints and belting out his originals for anyone who'd listen.  At 18, he won the "Wrangler Country Showdown" but couldn't claim the prize because he'd already enrolled in the Marines.  After a six-year hitch with Uncle Sam, he moved to Austin, where he reacquainted himself with music and won a role in the 1994 theatrical production of Chippy.  He performed alongside Terry Allen, Butch Hancock, Joe Ely and Robert Earl Keen and Rolling Stone proclaimed, "The nasal honky-tonk of newcomer Wayne Hancock practically steals the show."

A product of New York City and the excitement and turbulence of the sixties, the New Swing Sextet made its professional debut performing in the Singer Bowl at the last New York Worlds Fair in 1965.  The band has been a popular and innovative exponent of Latin jazz, salsa and pop music for nearly four decades.

Composed of vocals, piano, vibes, bass and Latin percussion, the original New Swing broke up in the late seventies after successfully recording, touring and doing all the hot club dates that the New York metropolitan area had to offer.  In recent years most of the groups core members have reunited and have been performing with Mambo Negro the highly popular Latin jazz ensemble, which performs regularly in and around the tri-state area.  However, you can't buy or replace 40 years of history, and on special occasions the band performs as the New Swing.  The New Swing offers an established and respected name with a sound from another era, which has been perfectly preserved and bottled for another generation to enjoy.

The band was part of a young crop (and new breed of aspiring Latin musicians) who grew up in the greater New York Metropolitan tri-state area with its rich ethnic mix and diverse inner-city culture, while at the same time growing up surrounded by the Latin music explosion happening in the region.

LIVE SWING w/
CASEY MACGILL'S BLUE 4 TRIO

9:00p Lesson
9:30p-12:30a Dance

All Ages
Lesson & Dance: $10

Casey MacGill's Blue 4 Trio performs music that swings. Some have called it the Nat "King" Cole Trio meets the Mills Brothers. Others have called it Fats Waller meets Fats Domino. Slim Galliard meets Fred Astaire. Its music from the ''20's to the '60's, all happening at the same time, woven into a seamless, beautiful whole. At the core of the sound are the band's sometimes sweet, sometimes rough-hewn three-part harmony vocals and a piano-ukulele-bass-and-drums rhythm section that swings along in a variety of textures. Their debut recording as a group, "Casey MacGill's Blue 4 Trio", features 10 trio tracks and 2 quartet tracks. Says Casey: "My other projects were like oil paintings, constantly being tweaked and refined. The Blue 4 Trio CD is my watercolor, I put the paint on and what you get is what you get." The result is soft, loud, happy, sad, raw, mellow, with an honest mistake or 2 thrown in for good measure. It is a real band playing real music.

Casey MacGill is the heart and soul of the band. From California, he is a classic Hollywood character in appearance and style. MacGill plays boogie-woogie, swing, and stride piano. He blows a lyrical cornet, and his most unique instrumental voice is a 6-string tenor ukulele. He has been singing and arranging vocal harmonies for almost 30 years, in a career that stretches from Los Angeles (Mood Indigo, feature films "Frances" and "Swing Shift") to Spokane, WA (The Spirits of Rhythm and the neo-swing classic CD "Jump") to Broadway (The musical "Swing") and finally to Seattle. "I've played a lot of music with a lot of people," he says "and one thing I've learned is to tailor my arrangements to the individual musicians. Its gives each musical situation a unique sound." He steers the band from his piano bench, alternately cruising along and sweating feverishly, switching intuitively between the ukulele and the piano and the cornet, singing and scatting, sometimes all within the same song.

Mike Daugherty came to Seattle from Baltimore, Maryland--a fact that is not lost on anyone. He played drums in punk rock bands in his hometown. In the Pacific Northwest, he founded and led the Yes Yes Boys, a popular early jazz and hokum band that featured Del Rey on Ukulele. Almost everything about his style is East Coast, from his bowties to his whiskey-cum-loudmouth singing style. Brash, yes, but with a melancholy undertone. What is curiously understated is his drumming. "When I started playing with the B4T I had to change. The sound required a more understated rhythm thing, so I lost the bass-drum, the toms, some cymbals, and ended up with the little kit you see me using today. I use brushes mostly, sticks very occasionally. It allows us to stay close together on stage, and puts the focus on the song and the singing."

Bassist Matt Weiner's resume includes performances and recordings with The Flying Neutrinos, The Hot Club of Cowtown, The Asylum Street Spankers, Rani Arbo, Danny Barnes and Willy Mason. He hails from Boston, lived in New York City and Austin, TX before coming to Seattle. He eschews the modern "amplified" acoustic bass style for the plucky stomp of the early jazz bass pioneers like Walter Page, Pops Foster, Steve Brown and Jimmy Blanton. "When Mike, Casey and I got together, the fit was just right," says Matt. "Casey and Mike let me play bass the way I hear it, because that's the way they like to hear it." Matt relishes the challenge of playing bass and singing at the same time: "I'm playing two fretless instruments at once, so things can get squirrelly. That's why I'm not always smiling up there."

The Opus One Big Band, led by Chester Whitmore, is an 14-piece orchestra recreating the hot Big Band and jazz sounds from the 1920s to the 1940s. Their material includes many popular tunes from the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom, with musical sources such as Duke Ellington, Jimmy Lunceford, Count Basie, Chick Webb and Cab Calloway.

Like their idols from the old swing era, this is not a sedate, nice dinner crowd Big Band. Opus One does not make appearances dripping with sentimental grease and political correctness - Opus One is unleashed! Known for a usually, shall we say, flamboyant stage show, these musicians will play wild solos, compete for your attention, prance around on stage, parade on the dance floor and, on occasion, even place their leader in a guillotine!

Ernestine Anderson continues to demonstrate that her special bluesy style has enormous appeal. An acknowledged virtuoso of the blues - her rendition of "Never Make Your Move Too Soon" is a classic - Ms. Anderson is equally superb with ballads and swing. Years of singing and living have shaped this vocalist who can make your heart cry one moment and dance the next.

Poignant ballads, sassy swing, and down-home blues, she's master of them all. Whether it's Ellington or Sting, her interpretation of a song is infectious. On stage, she's charming and vivacious, her joy in the music delighting audiences from Sweden to Japan.

What a wonderful band to swing dance to!

The Radio Rhythm Orchestra is the last in a series of Seattle swing bands created by the late John Holte. Currently led by Pete Leinonen, the orchestra is available in various configurations ranging from six to fifteen pieces, with and without vocalists. We have been in existence since 1972, first as The New Deal Rhythm Band, followed by the Swingland Express, John Holte Swing Band, and finally Radio Rhythm Orchestra, and have been credited with inspiring the West Coast Swing Revival.

Appearing frequently at venues including the New Orleans Creole Restaurant, the Century Ballroom, New Melody, China Harbor, Living Traditions Dance, West Seattle Golf Course, Seattle Center, Bumbershoot, The Fenix, The Showbox, Benaroya Hall, and numerous other establishments, we have also played for countless special events including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, corporate events, New Year's Eve and Christmas parties, U.W. homecoming dances (we outdrew Nirvana), Harvest balls, fraternity and sorority parties, World Fairs, political events, in films and recordings, and for all the local swing dancing clubs. We have developed a loyal and diverse following in the swing dance community, and appeal to all age groups. In addition to dancing, the orchestra is also enjoyable in a listening environment where we can deliver a happy and uplifting experience in these troubled times.
